Department of Music Studies
The concept of popular music is complex, multidimensional, and multimodal. In this course, we will examine popular music through the lens of multimodal analysis, focusing on the study of its production, distribution, and consumption. Emphasis will be placed on areas such as mass culture, functions and identities, its impact on daily life and social relationships, artist personas and vocal expression, musical genre, song structure, and technology.
Through the tripartite approach of description – analysis – interpretation, we will explore representative examples of songs to understand and interpret their multiple connotations and cultural contexts. The ultimate goal is for students to integrate these analytical practices into their future teaching in formal or informal learning environments, fostering a richer and more multidimensional educational setting that reflects their students' musical experiences and preferences.
