Music Education and STE(A)M

The submission of the students to the artistic events of the 9th Online Conference of the Greek Society for Music Education (GSME) on the theme: "Music Education in a Changing World: Identities, Values, Experiences" (April 15-17, 2022).

Professor: Smaragda Chrysostomou

How are computers related to fruits? Is it possible for fruits and coins to make music?

Mr. Giannis Mygdanis guided the students of the Department of Music Studies and the students of the Department of Primary Education of the University of Athens in a practical workshop on the use of technology and music technology in the school classroom. He presented the use of tools such as makey makey, with which the students created music and accompanied the song by Maia Kokkidou and Giannis Mygdanis "To 'Doutou Drakou'".

The workshop took place within the framework of the courses "Interdisciplinary Approach to Music Teaching" and "Music-Pedagogical Systems" of the two Departments. We had the opportunity to see the STEAM model in practice, an approach that has become so popular in recent years.

With the contribution and collaboration of Ms. Elisavet Perakaki, a member of the Teaching Staff of our Department, students from both departments experimented with sound production using makey-makey and then learned the song and accompanied it with the tools they had just discovered, as well as tonal and non-tonal percussion instruments such as maracas, tambourine, boom-whackers, glockenspiel, etc. The video you see has emerged from this workshop. This is the second time they have sung the song, and it is in an experimental stage, with many parts of the accompaniment being semi-improvised. Mr. Mygdanis processed it, resulting in this beautiful final outcome.
